When a Complete Denture Is the Right Choice

A complete denture is recommended when no natural teeth remain in an arch, or when the remaining teeth are too weak to keep. It is also the usual next step for people whose old denture has become loose, cracked or worn flat after many years.

  • All teeth missing in the upper or lower jaw.
  • An old denture that rocks, clicks or causes sore spots.
  • Worn teeth that make the face look shorter or older.
  • Difficulty chewing firm foods or speaking clearly.

What Makes a Well-Made Complete Denture

Accurate Impressions

A first impression and a custom-tray final impression capture the gums and muscle movements, so the denture seals properly.

Balanced Bite

We record how your jaws close and set the teeth so pressure is shared evenly, which helps the denture stay in place.

Natural Appearance

Tooth shape, shade and position are chosen with you at the wax try-in, before anything is finished.

Complete Dentures and the Canadian Dental Care Plan

CDCP covers one complete denture per arch every 8 years, and no preauthorization is needed. Depending on your family income, CDCP pays 100%, 60% or 40% of its fee guide. Learn more on our CDCP dentures page.

Living With Your New Complete Denture

The first two weeks are an adjustment period. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once. Reading aloud helps your tongue and cheeks learn the new shape. If a sore spot appears, call us: small adjustments are part of the process.

Over the years, the gums and bone underneath slowly change. A reline refits the base without replacing the teeth, and is usually needed every few years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do complete dentures last?

With good care, most complete dentures last 5 to 8 years. Relines along the way keep the fit snug as your gums change.

Will my new denture look fake?

It should not. You approve the teeth in wax before the denture is finished, and we can adjust the shade, size and position at that stage.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

We recommend taking them out at night. Your gums need time to rest, and soaking the denture keeps it clean.
